Organized by Encomiums Ventures Ltd., publishers of Encomium Weekly and Encomium Special in conjunction with The Academy of Creative Arts in Nigeria (ACAN), the Reel Awards fulfills the expectations of true professionals and practitioners of the movie business in Nigeria. It entrenches artistic and technical competence, directorial and production excellence in all the spheres of the creative arts.
The awards ceremony brings together stars of the screen: video and television, young and old favourites and celebrities. It gives due recognition to people whose lives are devoted to dispensing happiness and mirroring our triumphs and failures, providing hope for the future.
BACKGROUND
With its maiden edition popularly acclaimed in the Nigerian media, The Reel Awards has carved an image as a truly potential barometer for Nigeria’s video sector. Staged first on Sunday, May 31, 1998 at the prestigious Banquet Hall of the Excellence Hotel and Conference Centre (Ogba, Ikeja, Lagos), REEL aspires to redirect and enhance the productions of Nigerian professionals.
CONCEPT
The movie world is one of the most glamorous on earth. Its celebrities, stars and people behind the camera are household names. Apart from providing entertainment for billions of people, millions depend on it for survival. And in the United States of America, Europe and Asia, billions of dollars are generated in the industry every year.
The climax of the entertainment industry calendar year are the awards ceremonies, which celebrate excellence. There are the Oscars, Emmy, Tony and Golden Globe awards, amongst others. Stars are made at these events, and interest generated therein result in more billions of dollars.
In such a climate, major television networks invest heavily in these events through broadcasting rights so as to beam the glamorous spectacles, not only to millions of their nationals, but to billions around the globe, with their attendant commercial exploitations.
